IT Apprenticeships at Vital

We caught up with Vital apprentice, Jack, to find out more about his responsibilities and the day-to-day life of a tech apprentice.

Apprenticeship schemes allow us the opportunity to guide the next generation of IT specialist through their development.

The great work our apprentices do is something we take immense pride in and over the years we’ve had many success stories. Years after joining as apprentices, many are still a part of our team here at Vital.

One such success story is that of Jack, who has been with us now for 9 months on a Level 3 apprenticeship as an Azure Cloud Support Specialist. It’s fair to say that he has made remarkable progress during his time so far, and we’re thrilled to have him on board.

For an apprentice, balancing independent study and on-the-job training is crucial to succeed. We caught up with Jack to find out how he strikes this balance and gained insights into his day-to-day responsibilities and his role here at Vital.

What made you choose an IT Apprenticeship?

“Ever since I was young, I’ve had a strong interest in IT. Over the years, I’ve built numerous computers and messed about with laptops, Raspberry Pis and game consoles.”

“Throughout my formal education I studied Computer Science at both GCSE and A-Level. To follow this passion further, I decided the best way forward would be to continue in an IT related apprenticeship.”

What are the typical responsibilities of your role?

“My weeks are split across on-the-job and study. With four days working alongside the Vital team, and one day dedicated to going through my coursework, studying, and completing any work I am set by my apprenticeship provider.”

“Whilst on the job my time is mainly shared between working on the helpdesk and the workbench.”

“On the workbench I help to ensure that any equipment and technology we provide our clients is ready to run and meets the standards our clients have come to expect. I also get the chance to repair broken and upgrade old equipment.”

“As a member of the helpdesk team, I assist customers and clients in resolving any technical issues they encounter. Mainly I remotely troubleshoot and resolve these issues, as well as fulfil service requests.”

“Working through my ticket queue, I’m often the first point of contact for many of our clients. My responsibility is to liaise with them and ensure to solve their tickets as soon as possible.”

“Through interactions with clients, I learn about their typical questions, concerns, and problems, and can develop more accurate and relevant responses.”

Has working at Vital been how you thought it would be?

“It has! It’s been really enjoyable and interesting!”

“Working on both sides, workbench and helpdesk, has been very engaging and has helped me develop knowledge in both areas. I’ve picked up loads of transferable skills along the way.”

“The best part of my role is working alongside my colleagues. If I ever need help or advice with a ticket or any issue, they’re always really approachable and available to ask for help.”

“Not only that, but everyone is great to talk to! It’s a fun work environment and it really helps make my time here that bit more enjoyable.”

What are you most proud of since starting?

“Seeing how far my knowledge has evolved over the past few months. When I look back at the old tickets, notes and guides I’d written, it’s clear that I’ve learned a great deal during my time here.”

“This apprenticeship helps me stay up to date with the latest advancements in technology and language processing, which will allow me to better serve and assist users in the future and strive towards the career that I want.”

“I’m looking forward to learning more and seeing where this journey takes me.”
